Cabinet Hardware and Soft-Close Retrofits in Kitchener

Sometimes the kitchen is fine and the hardware is the problem. Doors that slam, drawers that stick on centre-mount slides, a corner cabinet nobody can reach into. Those are small jobs with a large effect on how a kitchen feels every day.

Hardware is the part of a kitchen you touch fifty times a day, and on cabinets from the 1980s and 1990s it is often the part that has worn out while the boxes and doors are still good. Retrofitting hardware is the cheapest cabinetry work there is, it needs no permit and no other trades, and it is frequently the right first step before deciding whether a kitchen needs refacing at all.

Soft-close hinges

Most 1990s kitchens in Forest Heights and Stanley Park have either exposed hinges on face-frame cabinets or early concealed hinges without any damping. Retrofitting soft-close is either a straight hinge swap, where the existing cup boring and mounting plates are compatible, or a new boring in the door and new plates on the frame, which is more work but still typically a day's work on an average kitchen. Clip-on dampers that attach to existing hinges are a cheaper half-step and work well on some hinge patterns and poorly on others; we will say which you have.

Drawer runners and drawer boxes

Old drawers run on a single centre-mount slide or on side-mount rollers that have flattened, and the drawer boxes themselves are often stapled particleboard with a thin bottom that has bowed. The retrofit is either new side-mount or undermount soft-close runners on the existing box, where the box is sound and the clearances work, or a new drawer box built to the opening on undermount runners, which is the better job and the usual recommendation. Undermount runners need a specific side clearance and box height, so on an old cabinet the drawer box is often rebuilt to suit them.

Pull-outs and organisers

  • Blind-corner pull-outs that bring the back of a corner cabinet out to you, replacing a lazy susan or an empty cave.
  • Roll-out shelves in base cabinets, so the back of a 24-inch deep cabinet is usable.
  • Waste and recycling pull-outs sized to Waterloo Region's bins.
  • Tray dividers, spice pull-outs, and under-sink organisers that work around the plumbing.

Pulls and knobs

Changing the pulls is the quickest visual update there is, and the only complication is hole spacing. New pulls that match the existing centre-to-centre spacing drop straight in; a change in spacing means filling and finishing the old holes, which on a stained door is visible and on a painted door is not. Backplates are the usual way around it on stained doors.

Countertop coordination

On every new cabinet install, the cabinet maker coordinates the countertop. That means the base cabinets are set level and to the agreed layout before the fabricator templates, the fabricator is told the install date and the overhang and edge details, the sink and cooktop cut-outs are confirmed against the cabinets below them, and someone is reachable when the top goes on. You choose the fabricator and the material; the coordination is part of the cabinetry job so that the two trades do not blame each other for a gap. Plumbing reconnection after the top is installed is the plumber's work, and if the sink is moving, the City of Kitchener's permit list applies to that.

Frequently asked questions

Can soft-close hinges be added to my existing doors?

Almost always. Either the new hinges fit the existing boring and plates, or the doors are re-bored and new plates fitted. Clip-on dampers are a cheaper partial option on some hinge types. A typical kitchen is a day's work.

Is it worth replacing just the drawer boxes?

Often yes. New drawer boxes on undermount soft-close runners transform how a kitchen feels, and they are frequently done alongside a refacing or on their own in a kitchen whose doors are fine.

Do you install the countertop?

No, the countertop fabricator does. The cabinet maker sets the boxes level and to layout, coordinates the template and install dates with your fabricator, and is reachable on the day. You choose the fabricator and material.
