Kitchen Cabinet Costs in Kitchener (2026)
Planning ranges for kitchen cabinetry in Kitchener in 2026, and a plain account of why a refaced oak kitchen in Forest Heights and a custom kitchen in Doon South are not the same purchase.
Cabinet pricing is confusing because the same word, kitchen, covers a $6,000 hardware-and-doors refresh and a $60,000 custom build. The figures below are planning ranges for the cabinetry and its installation only. They are typical of Waterloo Region in 2026, they exclude countertops, plumbing, electrical, flooring and any other trade, and every job is quoted in writing after a measure.
Planning ranges, cabinetry and install only
- Hardware and soft-close retrofit on an existing kitchen (hinges, runners, pulls, a few pull-outs): roughly $800 to $3,000 depending on the number of doors and drawers and whether drawer boxes are rebuilt.
- Cabinet refacing of a typical 10-foot by 12-foot kitchen with sound boxes (new doors and fronts, veneer, soft-close hinges, new drawer boxes, hardware): roughly $8,000 to $16,000; adding cabinets above removed soffits or replacing a damaged box or two moves it up.
- Stock cabinets, supplied and installed, same layout: roughly $7,000 to $14,000.
- Semi-custom cabinets, supplied and installed, same layout: roughly $14,000 to $30,000, with plywood boxes, painted finishes and ceiling-height uppers at the upper end.
- Custom cabinetry, same layout: roughly $28,000 to $60,000 and beyond, depending on species, finish, door construction and detailing.
- Island alone (storage and seating, no services): roughly $3,000 to $9,000 for semi-custom, more for custom with furniture details.
- Wall pantry or pantry cabinet run: roughly $2,000 to $7,000 depending on width, height and interior fittings.
What moves the price
- Box material. Particleboard is the baseline on stock and many semi-custom lines; hardwood plywood is an upgrade and the one most worth taking, particularly under the sink.
- Door construction and finish. Slab laminate is cheapest; painted MDF shaker is the common middle; stained solid wood, inset doors and specialty finishes step up from there.
- Drawers versus doors. A drawer stack costs more than a door cabinet of the same width because of the drawer boxes and runners, and it is the upgrade people are most glad they paid for.
- Height and crown. Ceiling-height uppers with a stacked crown add material and install time over standard 30-inch uppers under a soffit.
- Interior fittings. Pull-outs, blind-corner units, tray dividers and organisers are priced per piece and add up.
- The room. An out-of-level 1960s kitchen in Stanley Park takes longer to install than a true new build in Doon South because of shimming and scribing.
- Scope creep into other trades. Moving the sink, adding island receptacles or opening a wall are not cabinetry costs, but they change the project total and the schedule and bring in the City's permit list and the Electrical Safety Authority.
Countertops
Countertops are quoted by the fabricator you choose and are not in the ranges above. What the cabinet maker provides is the coordination: level boxes, the template and install dates, and someone reachable on the day. Budget for the top separately and expect the template-to-install gap to be the part of the schedule when the kitchen is least usable.
How to compare quotes
A cabinet quote you can compare names the box material and thickness in real terms (hardwood plywood, particleboard, MDF), the door style and material, the drawer box construction, the hinge and runner hardware, every cabinet with its dimensions, what is and is not included at the scope boundary, and the current lead time for that line and finish. A lump sum with a door sample and none of that is not comparable to anything.
Frequently asked questions
How much does cabinet refacing cost in Kitchener?
As a planning range, a typical kitchen with sound boxes commonly lands between roughly $8,000 and $16,000 installed for new doors and fronts, veneer, soft-close hinges, new drawer boxes and hardware. Removing a soffit and adding cabinets, or replacing a few damaged boxes, moves it up. The written quote after a measure is the number that counts.
Is refacing really cheaper than new cabinets?
Yes, usually by a wide margin against semi-custom and by a very wide margin against custom, because the boxes, which are a large share of the material and the install, stay. It only stops being cheaper when so many boxes need replacing that you are most of the way to a new kitchen.
Why is custom so much more than semi-custom?
Drawings, plywood boxes, solid wood and MDF doors made to each opening, spray finishing, and an install scribed to the room all cost more than catalogue boxes in catalogue sizes. Custom earns it in awkward rooms and specific designs and does not in a plain rectangular kitchen, and the cabinet maker will say which you have.
Do you charge for the measure and quote?
No. The measure and the written quote are free. We do not give kitchen prices over the phone because the box count, the materials, the drawer-to-door ratio and the room decide the number, and none of those are known until someone has stood in the kitchen.
Does moving the sink to an island cost a lot more?
The cabinetry cost is similar; the project cost is not. Moving plumbing fixtures is on the City of Kitchener's list of permit-required work, so it adds a plumber, a permit and time, and receptacles in the island add an electrician through the Electrical Safety Authority. We will tell you that at the measure so it is in your budget.
Is there a cheaper time of year?
Shops are busiest from late winter through early summer as people plan for the holidays and the warm months. A fall or early-winter install can be quieter, though cabinets are made to order either way, so any saving is on scheduling rather than the product.
