Kitchen Cabinets in Stanley Park

Cabinetry across Stanley Park in Kitchener's east end, where the houses are a decade or two older than Forest Heights and the kitchens are smaller and less square.

Stanley Park, east of the expressway around Ottawa Street North and River Road, was largely built in the 1960s and 70s, and its kitchens are compact, often galley or L-shaped, with bulkheads, a window over the sink that lands where an upper would go, and floors and walls that have had sixty years to settle. Some kitchens still have original cabinets; many were replaced with oak in the 80s or 90s. Both come up. Where the boxes are sound, refacing works as it does in Forest Heights. Where the originals are site-built with no backs, or the boxes have been through a few leaks, a semi-custom or custom replacement is the better route, and custom earns its cost here more than in a new build because the room is awkward and standard sizes leave fillers everywhere. Installs in Stanley Park take longer than the same cabinets in Doon South: the floor's high point has to be found and every base shimmed to it, and fillers and panels are scribed to walls that wander. Keeping the sink where it is avoids any permit question; moving it, or taking down a wall between the kitchen and dining room, goes onto the City of Kitchener's list and into another trade's hands.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover Breslau and the townships?

Yes. The work is the same; the administration is different. Breslau is in the Township of Woolwich, so any part of a project that needs a permit, such as moving plumbing for an island, goes through the Township rather than the City of Kitchener. Cabinets on their own do not need a permit in either.

Is the quote different for an older house?

The cabinetry is priced the same way, but older kitchens in Stanley Park or Forest Heights often have walls and floors that are out of level, soffits to deal with, and existing boxes to assess for refacing. The measure takes longer and the install allows for scribing. A new house in Doon South is usually truer, but still settling, which the install details account for.

Do you work with the countertop company I choose?

Yes. Countertop coordination means the boxes are installed level and to the agreed layout, the fabricator is told when to template, and the cabinet maker is reachable when the top goes on. You can use any fabricator; the cabinet maker can suggest ones they have worked with if you would like.
